It is not enough to hope and wish that
things will change for our beloved country. It is not nearly
enough to think that sending a few hundred bucks a month to
some family members should make their life better. We, as a
people need to start a revolution. We need to reach deep into
our consciences, and start the fist War of that revolution. We
need to make sure that our own conscience is clear of any
hatred, bigotry, prejudices, laziness, and all the vices which
usually lead to a state of regression instead of progression.
Haiti needs all of its children to stride
forward in this New World. Material goods that we have earned
in foreign lands should never make us forget where we came
from. The riches that we have accumulated by exploiting the
peasantry of the country should be shared with the peasants.
When we go to sleep at night how could our conscience be at
peace, if we haven't gotten rid of all the greed that envelops
us? Haiti, the land of Toussaint and Dessalines, the soil
where the blood of slavery is used as water to help the tree
of liberty grows. The land of Boukman and Makendal where
bravery was once a common denominator. It is sad that in
a short 200 years, the tree of liberty has stopped producing
any fruits, and bravery is as scarce as finding a dinosaur.
Our civic duty towards our beloved land
is not one of despair, but instead one of optimism. We know
that when we wake up in the morning, the sun will be there. We
should have that same optimism when it comes to Haiti future.
We have to believe that tomorrow will be better for her, and
all its children. To be optimistic, one has to have a clear
conscience. One that is filled with love, brotherhood,
dedication, loyalty, respect, hard work, altruism. Those my
friends are the things needed to make a better community. The
best community is one comprised of good people. We should
never talk about changes for Haiti, if we are reluctant to
change ourselves first. We ought to start fighting the evil
forces which are keeping a grip on us. The forces that are
rendering us useless to our fellow countrymen. The road ahead
is not easy, but the march has to begin with a cleansing of
our consciences. We should not rest until we get our
consciences clear of all evils, and yes my brothers a day will
come when all Haitians will put their self interest aside, and
continue the revolution started by the founders of our
country. "Liberte ou la mort" crie Dessalines, and
we all know that the price of freedom is infinite. It is a
civic duty to fight to become a better citizen, and once we
understand the role of a citizen towards the motherland, then
and only then will Haiti see the lights of freedom,
prosperity, and above all an harmony fraternal which will keep
us strong, and united during adversities.
